It’s official, the 5.0 is back! That’s right… we learned today that the iconic 5.0-liter will return in the 2011 Mustang GT with an impressive 412-hp at 6500 rpm and 390 ft-lbs of torque. This information was released today and was embargoed until the 28th, but after a loose-lipped individual leaked the info, we’re certainly not going to sit back and miss out. The new 5.0-liter Mustangs can be fitted with either the 6R80 automatic transmission or the MT82 six-speed manual.

The new powertrain combination will also return 25 miles per gallon, says AW. How does it manage this feat? With an aluminum engine block with cast cylinder sleeves and brand-new heads with four valves per cylinder, vertical intake ports and twin independent variable valve timing. Don't forget the tuned exhaust headers, a forged steel crankshaft with four-bolt main bearings, high-performance pistons and forged connecting rods.

The output is still short of both the Challenger SRT8 (http://www.s197-mustang.com/forum/#) and Camaro SS, but those vehicles weigh hundreds of pounds more, so the added power, combined with the ‘Stangs more nimble chassis should make the already superior performer a unanimous winner in the muscle cars wars.
Ford is set to debut the car at the Detroit Auto (http://www.s197-mustang.com/forum/#) Show, and the return of the 5.0 was expected after Ford debuted a new 305-hp 3.7-liter V6 for the base Mustang at the LA Auto Show.

AutoGuide will bring you full coverage of the official debut on January 11th, unless, of course, more info is leaked… because we’re currently sitting on a long list of technical specs that will have five-oh fanatics drooling.

I've been reading all these the last few days and am pumped. This may be my first special order new car since my '82 Camaro. I've bought off the lots since...

Ours will be ordered on Jan 18th when Ford starts accepting orders. We will be getting a stripped down GT with the 6spd manual. Most likely Silver like our 06 that is for sale. Job1 starts mid March and once we get the car we will immediatly take it to the dyno and then directly to the track for some baselines, then keep your eyes out for how hardcore we are going to get with this car. :)

I have been running numbers in the excel spreadsheet

Now that the Curb weight numbers are corrected,
but the 2011 Mustang is not going to walk on the 2010 camaro, check out the numbers.

Pounds per Horsepower
the Mustang GT eeks by with an 8.75 to Camaro 9.04

Pounds per Torque
The Camaro eeks by in the Torque per Lbs with 9.16 to the Mustangs 9.24

Horsepower to weight ratio

Clearly it is going to come down to a drivers race for sure...
these cars are evenly matched.
