The Crying :cryb:
I can't catch a F'in break to save my life dude. Is it too much to ask that the car stays running for more than a few months a year? LOL
Went to the track yesterday...
My very first past my trans started letting go. I did not notice it at first, but one of my friends met me at the ticket booth and said "holy shit Spaz, was that your car chattering away down the track?" I didn't feel anything and figured it must have been Said (the guys I was racing).
Well 2 really bad passes later, on the return road I noticed I had to rev that sucker up a couple of times to get the TC to engage. It drove fine through the pits and I went out on the road to test drive it and it seemed fine.
The Tech Stuff
I pit, change the 3-4 shift pressure, adjust the tire pressure again, and "try" to head back out. Well, no matter what gear I select the TC won't engage. I'm reving it, picking a few different gears, nothing happens. Finally after bumping it a few times, it builds pressure and the TC kicks in.
I take it for a ride and this is what I found: It takes a bunch of gear changes and motor revs to get the TC to engage. If I keep the TC engaged, it will stay until I pop it out of gear. Then it's back to praying. When I am driving, the gear changes are really harsh and it seems to skip a gear and then downshift to the correct gear. Basically it will shift really hard from 1 to 3, then downshift to 2. Then it will shift really hard from 2 to 4, then down shift to 3, etc. This all takes less than a second per gear change, but it still happens.
Using the Ford service manual for test procedures I was able to confirm the TC itself is ok. The bands and solenoids are also testing out fine. It seems like the system is just not building pressure correctly or fast enough. I checked my fluid levels too. It is clean and dead on.
The things I am thinking to check/repair/replace in order are:
Checking the fluid lines for blocks/crimps
Clean/replace the trans oil filter
R&R the Fluid Pump
R&R the Main Control unit
Bad PCM (not too likely) and/or related wiring issue.
I am thinking the Fluid pump is the most likely source of my problems, but that thing is behind the TC, which means I have to drop the trans for that service. I am trying to avoid that, but I don't know how to confirm that it is actually what’s broken.
Should I just R&R the trans or should I replace the filter, fluid pump, and main control unit and consider it a light overhaul? If I do a light overhaul, does anyone know where a good place to get these parts would be?
Can you guys think of anything else I can do to confirm/test what’s wrong?
